There is something wonderfully gentle about live music in a care home on a warm summer afternoon.

A hot day can naturally bring a slower, more relaxed rhythm to life. It’s a time when we all tend to take things a little easier, find a comfortable spot and enjoy moments of calm.

During a recent visit to Bridge House Care Home in Elstead, I was reminded how much difference those thoughtful touches can make. Lauren, the lifestyle coordinator, had created a beautiful summer setting in the lounge. With the conservatory leading directly from the room, she had thoughtfully placed a light sheet across the opening, creating shade while still allowing a gentle flow of air through the space. With fans helping to keep everyone comfortable, it created a lovely cool and welcoming environment for residents to relax and enjoy the afternoon’s music.

Lauren’s care and attention continued throughout the afternoon with lovely cool and refreshing drinks for everyone, myself included. It all helped create the perfect setting for an afternoon of music, memories and smiles.

The warmer weather naturally created a more relaxed mood. Some residents enjoyed singing along to familiar favourites, while others were happy to sit back and let the music bring back memories of times gone by.

Summer days remind us to slow down and enjoy the simple things a cool, comfortable space, good company, and music that brings people together.

That is what makes singing in care homes so rewarding. It is not just about the songs themselves. It is about the little touches, the caring staff, the welcoming atmosphere, and creating enjoyable moments that help residents feel part of something special.

Because even on the warmest afternoons, music has a wonderful way of bringing comfort, memories and joy.
